A secret site in an undisclosed U.S. city is functioning as a supervised injection facility for illegal drugs without the approval of the government, according to a report in .

More than 100 people -- overwhelmingly homeless white men -- have used the site, with more than 2,750 injections to date. Users can administer their drugs in a safe environment with clean supplies, and at least two lives have been saved when trained staff were able to administer naloxone after overdoses.

Similar legal facilities have been established in other countries such as Canada and Denmark, and lawmakers in some U.S. cities such as Seattle and San Francisco are considering opening centers to help prevent the 91 overdose deaths occurring each day in this country.
